Gender inequality in the workplace
Gender inequality can exist both ways in roles or industries that are traditionally either male or female dominated. Whilst some companies are still following biased practices, many other companies are implementing strategies to create a more balanced workforce.
In 2018 General Motors was recognised as the only company to have a female CEO and have an equal number of men and women on its board. They were also one of just two other global giants that have implemented pay equality across all levels.
Starts with the Culture you promote which breathes into your hiring strategy
How would you describe the foundation of your company's culture? Do you have the type of culture where you would keep a team member who had a nice personality, but was not productive? How about if the team member was productive, but made racist or sexist remarks? What are the defining traits that unite you as a group?
How to promote equality and balance
As long as your culture supports these values, the focus of your hiring needs to be on who can perform the role. If you are in an industry where you tend to attract more of one particular gender, you can actually encourage others to apply in order to create a balance.
Performance Hiring
The Performia hiring system is arguably one of the most non prejudicial screening systems. It does not take into account age, gender, religion, appearance, experience, qualifications or disabilities. As first steps, only production potential and then fit to the position (personality) are assessed. Motivation, knowledge and reference checks come after the Performia evaluation.
This helps to nearly totally remove unnecessary, individual hiring bias or prejudices and keep the Company as a completely equal opportunity employer.
